Our Learning Philosophy – How, Why, When
We think that the bare minimum a student should get from a training session is the understanding of 'how' to execute techniques. However, we believe that the real value comes from understanding 'why' they are executing the technique and 'when' best to execute it.
Why / Escape, Control or Finish
Is the practitioner executing the technique to buy time to then escape from their opponent? Or are they executing the technique to take control of the situation and potentially enable an arrest? Or are they thinking of executing a devastating military style finish?
We teach students the available options they have and the positive and negative points of each.
When
Whatever the intent of the technique, the practitioner needs to decide 'when' to execute it. We teach situational awareness to aid a student's understanding of the environment, their escape options and the potential threat from others.
Intent
We also teach the need to 'read' your opponent's intent. What do your opponent's actions tell you about their plans, their options and potentially their next move?
What can you read from not only their body language but their body positioning - what are their body 'weapons' that they can employ next, how physically committed are they and what options does this give you?
